There is quite an extensive and varied network of Public Footpaths together with Bridle Paths within the Parish of Lea and Cleverton.

These are maintained by the Wiltshire Council's Rights of Way Department(ROW) based in County Hall. The County is divided into Areas each of which has a County appointed Warden who is responsible for the main upkeep and maintenance of the paths and the immediate infrastructure. In addition most Parish Council's have their own Rights of Way Officer who has the responsiblity to ensure that all is well within the Parish and if necessary report any defects. Many of these Parish ROW Officers are able to carry out small repairs, they also arrange, with the agreement of the County Warden, local volunteer working parties to carry out some of the more extensive repairs, such as replacing and reparing stiles and associated fencing.

FARMERS AVOID LEGAL ACTION.

Do not plough public footpaths on your land.

Can't avoid it?. Then reinstate immediately when ploughing. Compact the surface by running your tractor wheels over the route to maintain a level and firm surface. If a crop is emerging - use a flail or mower. You must ensure the route is apparent on the ground. In addition peg out the line.

Remembera minimum width must be retained. Cross-Field Footpath 1.0 metres. Field-Edge Footpath 1.5 metres. Cross-Field Bridleway 2.0 metres. Filed- Edge Bridleway 3.0 metres. Other unsurfaced Highway 3.0 metres.

A CLEAR PATH MEANS USERS WILL NOT STRAY FROM ROUTES CROSSING YOUR LAND.
