Meeting Notes July 06

Members met in Cathy Draper’s beautiful garden on a very hot afternoon. Priscilla Gray, Federation Chairman, was welcomed as a special guest. The occasion also marked the 85th anniversary of the formation of Biddestone and Hartham W.I. Business was kept to a minimum. Betty Evans read the report on the AGM held in June written by Mrs. Sheila Rosetilly, from Derry Hill W.I. There will be two Open Days at NFWI Head office in London on 5th and 6th December, as well as a New Speakers Day at Haywood in Hawkeridge Village Hall on 27th September from 10.15am to 3.45pm. Members were asked to meet at the Village Hall at 2pm for the outing to Abbey Gardens, Malmesbury, on 16th August. Members going to visit the Blake’s on 2nd August should please meet at Margaret Beswick’s at 2p.m. A clipboard was circulated asking for help and/or cakes for the Open Gardens Day at Biddestone Manor on 27th August, when all the money raised goes to the Village Hall. Margaret reported on the Best Kept Village competition; Biddestone was entered in the medium-sized village category in North Wilts. Although we came 10th out of 10, it was not quite as bad as it sounded as the winner had 68 points to Biddestone’s 58! Biddestone will enter again next year, noting the areas for improvement. A lovely tea, provided by members, was enjoyed together with a beautiful cake to celebrate the 85 years, which was made and cut by Jo. This was followed by musical entertainment, for which Audrey Kirby Smith gave the vote of thanks. The Best Hat competition was won by Jan Jones, and the photo competition for the 2008 calendar of the Federation, entitled ‘Entrances and Exits’, was won by Margaret with a delightful photograph of a blue tit emerging from its nesting box. At the end of the afternoon Cathy was presented with a bouquet of flowers as a thank-you to her and to John for being our hosts in such a beautiful setting. Betty Evans
